Mickie James’ career in WWE is a tapestry woven with passion, resilience, and unforgettable moments, and her performances at Backlash are some of the brightest threads. From her iconic clashes to her relentless pursuit of championship glory, Mickie’s Backlash matches showcase why she’s a legend in women’s wrestling. With the annual post WrestleMania event taking place this weekend, let's look back at Mickie's memorable matchups!
Backlash 2006: WrestleMania Rematch with Trish

In April 2006, Mickie James was riding high as the WWE Women’s Champion, having shocked the world by dethroning her idol, Trish Stratus, at WrestleMania 22. The victory was a career-defining moment, but it came with a challenge: proving she wasn’t a one-hit wonder. At Backlash, held at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, Mickie faced Trish in a highly anticipated rematch for the Women’s Championship. The storyline leading up to the match was electric—Mickie’s obsessive fandom had morphed into a fierce rivalry, and Trish was determined to reclaim her throne. Leading up to the event, Trish had turned the tables on Mickie's head games, dressing as "Trishie James", enraging her fomer admirer.

The two picked up right where they left off at WrestleMania, with Trish trying to match Mickie's aggression before a pivetol moment in the match, where Mickie tossed Trish off the top turnbuckle to the floor, resulting in a seperated shoulder for Stratus. Mickie however, did not let up, attacking Trish & choking her to the point where the referee called for a disqualification. Awarded the win, Trish was still without the Women's Championship, Mickie's title preserved by her nefarious actions!
Backlash 2007: A Technical Showdown with Melina

Fast forward to April 2007, and Mickie was no longer the champion but a hungry challenger. At Backlash in Atlanta’s Philips Arena, she faced Melina for the Women’s Championship in a match that showcased two of the new faces of the WWE women's division.

The match was a fast-paced, technical masterpiece, with Melina’s flexibility and aggression meeting Mickie’s relentless energy. From her Mickie-Thess-Press to a series of near-falls, Mickie had the crowd on edge. Despite her best efforts, Melina countered with a reverse DDT, securing the pin and retaining the title. Widely considered the premier women's match of 2007, Mickie and Melina solidified their status as cornerstones in a new era of women's wrestling.
Backlash 2008: A 12-Woman Tag Team Showdown

Mickie returned to Backlash on April 27, 2008, at the First Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland, this time in a six-woman tag team match. Teaming with Maria, Ashley, Michelle McCool, Cherry, and Kelly Kelly, Mickie faced off against Beth Phoenix, Melina, Victoria, Natalya, Jillian Hall, and Layla. This match came at a time when Mickie was riding high, having won her fourth Women’s Championship just weeks earlier on the April 14 episode of Raw in London, England, against Beth Phoenix.
